Hamlet Films
What’s the best adaptation of Hamlet on film?
It’s probably Shakespeare’s most filmed play, so who did the best version?
Of those available on DVD there’s Kenneth Branagh and Mel Gibson recently which were both quite good. Of the classics, there’s Laurence Olivier and Richard Burton. Peter Brook did a recent Hamlet with Adrian Lester and there’s the BBC Classic with Derek Jacobi. Ethan Hawke’s modern update was pretty slated. I must say my favourite is the Grigori Kozintsev Hamlet, very Russian, but riveting.
There have been lots of good adaptations as well including The Bad Sleep Well, The Banquet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
